Do privacy and confidentiality still exist?

May 13, 2012 in Daily Shoutout, IT and Stuff, Uncategorized

Lately I am asking myself whether privacy and confidentiality still exist. Why I am asking this question, well…it always comes back from my course in Vrije University. And this time it is from Software Architecture course.

In this course, we have to build the architecture of special software which most problem is in its privacy and confidentiality. But then I am thinking again, does it exist?

When I looked around, the social behavior has changed into more public and less private. How can I say such things? Well first, I observed two best social media which are Facebook and Twitter. Facebook is even more terrible than twitter because in Facebook everyone else can view your profile, pictures, thought, comment, anything. Especially after it is completed with “timeline” which you can not remove it once you install the timeline.

And the surprise thing is, people just share their information willingly. There is no such pressure or force to share their information even for really private information.

Another example is foursquare. The idea of this application is the user shared their current location information to their social network. In the old days, we usually tried to hide our information to most people if we are going to leave the empty house. The idea behind this is to prevent people to know that the house is left without any companion. Well, you might argue there is such a good security system in the house so you can just leave the house with no companion. But we can also argue that there are a lot of smarter criminal nowadays. :P

Btw, that is not the point, my point here is …people just willingly share their current location to everyone. Imagine if there is someone “admire” you badly and then track your location constantly. When there is an opportunity to “meet” you, he or she might “come” to meet you. Or when someone knows that your current location not at home, and then he knows that the home is empty, then he might come to the house and steal some goods from the house. Well, you got the idea, right?

So my question here: Does privacy still exist? Do we need to think about it? Are we totally aware that we are actually sharing our information publicly? Are we totally aware that our data in the internet will not be used for something else?

After reading this post, I hope that everyone will aware that we need to filter the information we want to share and not. Sometimes people argue that the world becomes more open and openness is good because everything is transparent. Well it depends on the context. Sometimes openness is good and sometimes it is not. We need to question ourselves whenever we want to update our information and share it. Once it is out there, it will never come back like before. :)

Never ever say I’m FINE anymore

May 8, 2012 in Daily Shoutout, Uncategorized

Everyday people will greet you in the morning, afternoon, or evening…

Hi, How are you?

Even though you meet him or her everyday, it seems that this is a habit to ask for it. I was not used to it. In my home country, Indonesia, we usually greet people like this if we have not met each other for very long time.

So, in the beginning I felt awkward when my friend or my collegue I met everyday asked me about it. “Hey Andys, How are you?” But now, I am used to it and I am kinda able to differentiate people feeling by now.
When they are happy they will say:
Yeah I am good!” , “Best“, “Never better!”, or “Prima!”
and there is also another type of answer: “I am FINE

The second type of answer should give you some alert. Because they actually does not really understand what they currently felt. When people sure with their feeling they will say either similarly to GREAT or SAD. But when they say they are FINE it is actually stands for Freaked Out, Insecure, Neurotic and Emotional.

Well, that might not work for everyone. But whenever I dunno what I felt…I just say I am FINE. Or it is actually to seduce your thought and feeling to be better because of something that you don’t know or because of something which made you unhappy such as saying to yourself multiple times “I am fine, I am fine, I am fine, I am fine…

But that is not good. So start from now, never ever say I am FINE! Let’s start your day by saying:

“I am GREAT and I will make something GREAT!”

That will really boost you up!

Sunday Mellow —– [NOT!]

May 7, 2012 in Daily Shoutout, Uncategorized

Last Sunday, I was so Mellow….maybe it is because of woman “thing”. But there are several occasion which made me terribly sad. Well not sad but just mellow.

To make me forget about everything I continued doing my assignment for f***** difficult Experiment Design and Data Analysis. Well at least I can forget my mellow-ness for a while.

Try to turn the television on, and violaaaa…my fave movie ever…”LEGALLY BLONDE”. I stopped doing my assignment and started to watch the movie. It was really inspiring! In the end, I realized again why I did what I did. It is because of this monologue!

Elle: On our very first day at Harvard a very wise professor quoted Aristotle… “the law is reason free from passion.” Well…no offense to Aristotle, but in my three years at Harvard I have come to find that passion is a key ingredient to the study and practice of law…and of life. It is with passion, courage of conviction, and strong sense of self that we take our next steps into the world. Remembering that first impressions are not always correct, you must always have faith in people, and most importantly…you must always have faith in yourself. Congratulations class of 2004…we did it!

It is with passion, courage of conviction, and strong sense of self that we take our next steps into the world.

you must always have faith in people, and most importantly…you must always have faith in yourself

Thanks to this monologue. It reminds me about every passion and dream I have ever had and I still need to pursue it. I must have faith in my self and forget about every mistake I have made in the past. In the end, we can only learn by doing some mistakes. Without mistakes, we never know which one is good and which one is not.

Byzantine in life – Distributed Algorithms (DA) fever

April 8, 2012 in Daily Shoutout, IT and Stuff, Uncategorized

Byzantine refers to Byzantine empires in Balkans and Turkey (330-1453). At that time, it was full with conspiracies and intrigues.  There was a general’s problem and agreement problem. In this case, the generals which are geographically separated must communicate to each other to be able to decide whether they have to attack the enemy army at some point. The communication is sent by means of messenger. However, the traitors (which is possibly the main-generals) will most likely sends different order to different generals. Therefore the other generals will unable to decide what to do.

I hope by now you understand the story behind the Byzantine problem.

So now let’s take the example in our own life:

for example there are three people (processes). One person wants to invite other two friends to come to the house for cooking together. Let’s say: A, B, C. A is the owner of the party (general). B and C are friends (lieutenant).

A sends message to B:

“Hi B, do you want to cook together at my house?”

“Hi A, of course. Let me know when are we going to cook together”

“I am available weekday only. On the weekend I am fully booked”

“Ok A, weekday then”

Couple days after that, A sends message as well to C

“Hi C, wanna cook together at my house?”

“Hi A, sure…when?”

“How about weekend?”

“that will do A. Nice!”

It is clear that A sent two different message to B and C. A sent weekday to B and A sent weekend to C. When B and C communicate to each other. Both of them are confused with the messages. Since B knows that A said only available in the weekday and fully booked in the weekend. But with C is different story, A offers weekend right away to C.

The exact message they both have are:

B receives message from A that the available day is weekday. B also receives message from C that the available day is weekend.

C receives message from A that the available day is weekend. C also receives message from B that the available day is weekday.

So B and C can not decide which day they should cook together.

It might be possible that A does not want to cook together with B since A knows that B will not have enough time during the weekday. But A wants to cook together with C and does not bother to place extra block in the weekend for C or A knows that C will also not have time in the weekend.  But the point is, Byzantine process will always try to confuse other processes to work in the correct order.

The story above is also proved that it is impossible to solve the Byzantine failure when the loyal-lieutenant (correct processes) are less than 2Byzantine process. If there is 1 Byzantine process, there should be at least 3 correct processes.

The lesson:

  • If you want to know whether your friend is telling the truth then you should get at least another two people in the ring (except the friend you want to know). In that case you will have 1 message from the friend, 2 messages from another friends. Then you can do internal check which messages have larger amount.
  • For boys who have two girlfriends at the same time, make sure that your girlfriends are not communicating to each other or even worse…make sure that they are not friend to each other. If that is the case…you are screwed man! :P

Kemacetan jakarta??? Oh nooooooooo!!!!

May 23, 2011 in Daily Shoutout, Living Thought, inti sari, kajian

Barusan baca-baca news archive lewat google reader, baru tahu jumlah mall di jakarta itu ternyata sebanyak 170. Gileeeee, jakarta segitu diisi 170 mall.

Kan sama aje bo-ong ya gan….nah loo…gak pernah mikir kan…:D

Nah menurutku tuh yang pas, gimana caranya misahin pusat pemerintahan dengan pusat ekonomi en pusat bisnis.

Dan yang resiko probabilitynya paling kecil. *ceileeeee….mentang-mentang habis ujian probabilitas en statistics jadi ngomongnya pake probability probability segala…

Berarti intinya ada 2 possible way kan:

  1. Pusat pemerintahan di pindah dari jakarta
  2. Pusat ekonomi en business dipindah dari jakarta

Nah mending ditilik satu-satu deh. Kalau kita ambil option pertama untung ruginya apa kira-kira ya.

Untung:

Kagak mungkin lah maksa tetep kerja dijakarta (buat PNS maksudnya). Lah wong dijakarta kagak ade ape ape lagi..Eit, kelupaan..en yang pindah gk cuman PNS nya aje…tapi juga anak istri dkk dkk nya. Masak mo pisahan ma suaminya. :P
  2. Jalan-jalan dijakarta gk perlu ditutup setiap kali (hari) pak SBY pergi ngantor dari rumahnya ke istana kepresidenan :D jadi gak bikin macet gitu maksudnya. Habisnya kesel, president kok malah bikin macet jalan.

Rugi:

  1. Biasanya kalau pindahan kan butuh waktu tuh. Gak cuman waktu aja, tapi juga tenaga, pikiran, duit (apalagi kalau pake dikorupsi segala), batin (kalau ketemu atasan atau oknum yang pengen ditampol!), en masih banyak lagi dah..pikir sendiri yak.
  2. Biasanya juga kalau pas lagi pindahan klimaksnya (kayak kalau kita pindahan rumah tuh kan ada waktu buat gotong2 barang tuh gan, nah maksudnya pindahan klimaks tuh ya gitu gan..nah kalau disini maksudnya mungkin transfer2 data, gotong-gotong dokumen gitu kali yeee). Naaaa berarti kan ada waktu vacuum buat pemerintahan beroperasi. Apa gak bahaya tuh gan. Kalau kita pindahan rumah sih paling juga cuman sehari 2 hari. Nah kalau pemerintahan yang segede gaban bin kayak benang mbulet yang abis dimainin ama kucingku …waaaaaaaaaaaa kacau kacau kacau…bisa-bisa vacuum tahunan dah *lebay

Ya sisain lah 4 or 8 biji mall di Jakarta. 2 buat Jakut, 2 buat Jaksel, 2 buat Jak pusat. etc etc. kan adil tuh gan :D

  3. Gak ada waktu vacuum

Kalau ruginya buat pemerintah, jujur ane belon kepikiran gan. Ntar kalau udah nemu ane share lagi dah.

Nah terus lahan-lahan bekas mall yang dihancurkan (karena kan pindah gan mallnya ke pulau lain) bisa dijadikan pelebaran jalan, jalur sepeda, taman (asal jangan dijadi-in tempat nge-bar mabuk, judi, en pacaran plus plus aje yeeee…) or perpustakaan kota yaaang asriiii abisss….

Gimana gan??? setuju kagak?

Lelaki biasa + wanita luar biasa = Lelaki luar biasa

January 11, 2011 in Daily Shoutout

I.N.T.A (*cara ngungkapinnya kayak model Culo en Boyo waktu kecil yaaaaa….)

” *I love you dad, I love you mom!

Accept him as he is, love him, support him, motivate him …. and he might become the best man you have ever had. Seperti judul diatas, lelaki biasa ditambah wanita luar biasa akan menjadi lelaki luar biasa.

Dibalik keberhasilan seorang suami pasti ada seorang istri dibelakangnya

Lesson today: Never leave in progress cooking unmonitored!

January 9, 2011 in Daily Shoutout

Ok….today I plan to have a nice dinner. Meat Soup Fantasy. And it is indeed now only in my fantasy :( Because I failed it.

I was boiling my meat to have a tender meat and yummy like usual but then I went to my room and continue to do my homework (added with facebook, chatting, singing, and blogging :D ) ….and I was totally forget that I was boiling my meat. :(

I heard something strange from the kitchen and I immediately remembered everything. When I came in the kitchen, it was big flame already. I panick..of course!!!!….then I started to try to put it off…..after some time it is off….fyuuuuhhh….Alhamdulillah….

but a lot of smoke filled my house :( . What a lot of carbon-dioxide!!! Can not breath!!!  *I am too much :D ….But it is indeed made me not be able to breath freely.

So this is my lesson today…

NEVER EVER LEAVE IN PROGRESS COOKING UNMONITORED

Otherwise:

  • you have to clean every mess you produced
  • you have to stay in cold (it is winter time) because you have to open every window and every door to let out the carbon-dioxide.
  • You have to stay hungry without food especially if it was your last stock which is happened to me. It was my last food :( Now I am hungry. I start to eat carrot, orange, cucumber, and lot of water. :( (
  • You have to dream about your fantasy food that you failed to eat :D

So remember it always! :D

Keep Smile! Brave yourself! Prove it!

Manusia Biasa : Ordinary Person

January 7, 2011 in Daily Shoutout

Aku memang manusia biasa
Yang tak sempurna dan kadang salah
Namun di hatiku hanya satu
Cinta untukmu luar biasa

Beberapa baris lagu ini terngiang-ngiang terus dikepalaku sejak kemarin.  Entah kenapa…

Untukmu yang akan kusayang. Hopefully forever.

Keep Smile! Brave yourself! Prove it!
